Winner of 4 Tony Awards in 2000, Elton John and Tim Rice captured the feeling of this great opera, originally written by Giuseppe Verdi and first performed in 1871.  It features 14 new and acclaimed songs written by John and Rice that tell the story of this timeless love which is doomed to tragedy.

The first scene opens at a museum, where ancient artifacts are displayed.  The most mysterious is a burial chamber.  Among the guests are two beautiful people who gravitate toward one another.  They are Aida and Radames.  As they sing “Every Story is a Love Story”, they are left alone on stage.

Aida is a Nubian princess whose people are conquered by the captain of the army, Radames.  Radames becomes entranced and falls in love with Aida, but he was already betrothed to Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter, and their wedding has been moved up due to Pharaoh’s poor health.  Amneris demands that the wedding be held, but Radames refuses after professing his love for Aida.  They are sentenced to be buried alive together under the sands of Egypt.
